Description nkomura@wikimedia.org 2010-06-11 21:24:07 UTC
Problems are reported from Japanese users that search does not work from i-Mode phone after the new interface was enabled on June 10. i-Mode(Docomo) has over 50% of market share in Japan, so this problem must be impacting large number of people. I left the message to find out which model are not working, but in the mean time, it'd be best redirect traffic to http://ja.m.wikipedia.org/.

we need useragent information for this.
Comment 2 Derk-Jan Hartman 2010-06-12 10:53:32 UTC
There are 3 iMode 'modes'

1: iMode
2: iMode Browser 2.0
3: iMode Full Browser

The useragents are listed here:

They usually start with:
DoCoMo
DoCoMo/2.0

Wether there are other non-DoCoMo devices that are supposed to be recognized as iMode devices, i'm not sure.

As far as I can tell, iMode uses cHTML, and iMode 2 is an extension of cHTML (both Content-Type: text/html).

iMode has a maximum page size (including all content of 500 kilobytes. When an iMode phone has Full Browser and detects pages larger than 500 Kilobytes, it will ask the user wether he wants to switch to Full Browser mode.

DoCoMo models with Full Browser support:

I'm not certain about the capabilities of Full browser mode, but i suspect it is close to to WAP 2.0 (XHTML Mobile Profile).

I'm not sure how these different versions of iMode are now used within the market, and wether we need to support both iMode 2 and Full browser. We could use some Feedback from Japanese devs on this.

Adam, could you work on supporting detection of these DoCoMo user agents in the browser detection code and blacklisting them for SimpleSearch?
Comment 4 Adam Miller 2010-07-06 20:45:10 UTC
Committed the blacklisting code in r69109. Could someone who has access to one of these phones take a look and reopen if the bug still exists?
