Description Amir E. Aharoni 2010-02-24 18:23:23 UTC
Hello,

The translation of all the messages at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:Wikimedia_mobile is complete.

What else needs to be done to set up the home page for http://he.m.wikipedia.org ?

I can help with anything related to Hebrew language issues or at least find the right techie guys who can help.
Comment 1 Hampton Catlin 2010-02-24 18:42:10 UTC
There are two ways about this. First, you can either
setup a specialized mobile home page: http://techblog.wikimedia.org/2009/12/mobile-homepage-in-your-language/

OR

You can get he.wikipedia.org to use the standardized selectors used in most of the wikis. The reference version of this is en.wikipedia.org.

This is the list of all of the selectors we support in CSS syntax:

  selectors:
    featured_article: "#mp-tfa"
    news_items: "#mp-itn"
    on_this_day: "#mp-otd"
    featured_picture: "#mp-tfp"
    facts: "#mp-dyk"

This second method is something that we are encouraging all languages to adopt so that as we move into the future, we can provide API access to our homepage bits.

When either of those things are completed, I'd be happy to close this ticket and push it up.

Thanks for the guidance.

One of our admins added the selectors to our main page.

Added here, not yet deployed:
http://github.com/hcatlin/wikimedia-mobile/commit/e71172d7737acb13a1c8f4a0f3a8daf92d0b3418

I still need to fix directionality for this type of homepage. Hope to do that later this weekend.

Thanks.

Notice also that the title of the HTML page is in English - "Wikipedia". If it just changes automatically to the correct Hebrew title when you deploy it, then please ignore this comment.

Hampton, I don't understand how it is possible that if I set he on my local stable version, I have proper directionality for he, yet that it breaks on he.m.wikipedia.org atm. Perhaps the server needs to be forced to restart ? It is the only thing that I can come up with atm that might still explain this.

When I check http://he.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/תומאס_מאן on the site, it seems ok. I'm not really an expert on directionality or what might cause the home page to do that.

We don't currently have any localizations for the name of the site. Its Wikipedia always, since that's the domain name. I have put in a request for translators to translate wikipedia, but that might take some time before its across the site.

Any suggestions from anyone about what might be causing this issue? ar.m.wikipedia.org seems to have the correct directionality... and we didn't really do anything to make that happen.

Any advice?

I am closing this until we get a volunteer who knows the encoding technology that he uses can work with us. I can't even identify if its right or wrong or anything.
Comment 10 Amir E. Aharoni 2011-02-12 15:07:58 UTC
Marking FIXED - the page already works.

I opened a separate bug 27363 about the directionality.
