Description skatepunk319 2005-05-23 23:13:39 UTC
After logging in I will browse http://en.wikipedia.org/ and will appear as
logged in on some pages and logged out on others. The problem started when I had
to switch from cable internet to satellite internet (specifically DirecWay).

- I Do Use
Microsoft Windows XP: Home Edition (Version 2002, Service Pack 2)
Mozilla FireFox 1.0.4.
Internet Explorer 6.0.
Windows Firewall

- I Don't Use
Ad-blocking software

- Failed to Solve the Problem
Turning off firewall
Clearing cache
Removing all cookies
Specifying en.wikipedia.org cookies to always be allowed
Unchecking the "Remember Me" checkbox during login
Checking the "Remember Me" checkbox during login

I have read on the Wiki help page that I may have a proxy problem. That seems
very likely because satellite connections use proxy servers and I did not have
this problem before I switched to a satellite connection--ruling out
cookie/cache problems.

I have tested on another computer in the house and received the exact same
results as I do on this computer.

Searching for this bug in Wikipedia's bugzilla yielded no relevant results.

I don't seem to have the problem on http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/

I changed the product from MediaWiki to Wikimedia web sites.
Comment 2 Guido Schlabitz 2005-05-26 20:28:06 UTC
Yes, Yes! Same problem here. Also using DirecWay. Let me know if I can be of
help in testing this annoying little bugger.
Comment 3 Zigger 2005-06-25 08:35:36 UTC
If the ISP proxy is causing inconsistent session/cache/header problems, it will
probably occur on any MediaWiki site. Bugzilla is not a wiki -- it has just
been styled to look like the MediaWiki Monobook skin. Changing product back
from "Wikimedia web sites".

The ISP may be able to explain their proxy anomaly, assuming that they know
about it. Otherwise, can someone attach HTTP traces for good and bad page
requests? (see http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/ )

HTTP traces for good and bad page requests

I hope the attachment is what you were requesting. The last request was the
only bad one (showed me as logged out), the rest were good ones (showed me as
logged in). Ugh! I hope I'm helping.
Comment 5 skatepunk319 2005-07-26 04:19:40 UTC
I have session/cache/header problems only on MediaWiki sites. I think there is a
bug in the MediaWiki code, and not my ISP, that's causing the problem. Don't
forget to check out the HTTP traces I attached to my previous comment, I hope
that's what you were asking for.
Comment 6 Tobias Hahn 2005-11-03 16:42:06 UTC
related to bug 1396 possibly since all of a sudden, i am experiencing both.
Comment 7 Rob Church 2005-11-04 17:30:25 UTC
Is the ISP using a caching proxy?
Comment 8 skatepunk319 2005-11-06 22:55:50 UTC
Yes, they use it to accelerate browsing since we're on a satellite connection.
Comment 9 Heath Hunnicutt 2006-03-09 06:50:17 UTC
Internet Explorer will attempt a special refresh if you press Shift+F5, but
I don't think it works around this sort of proxy-cache problem. For that,
you have to bypass the proxy, somehow.
Comment 10 Kevin Burke 2006-10-16 17:05:18 UTC
I am having the same problem and am using Hughesnet satellite (formerly
Direcway)but with a Mac. I will log in and will appear to be logged in but as
soon as I click on any link, I am logged out again. This happens across all
browsers. Latest versions of Firefox, Safari, Camino, and Explorer. I have
cleared the cache, cookies, history, stored passwords, and have no firewall.
Comment 11 Brion Vibber 2006-10-16 20:20:21 UTC
Kevin: that's just because your satellite connection has broken
proxies which break many web sites, including Wikipedia.
Disable the proxies or use the experimental HTTPS interface.
Contact your provider for information about proxies.
Comment 12 Kevin Burke 2006-10-16 22:50:16 UTC
thankyou, it was in the explorer preferences interface where i had to disable
the proxies and it sets this parameter for all applications. Direcway has a
help section that led me to the preferences.

very cool...
Comment 13 Chad H. 2009-01-02 20:43:27 UTC
WORKSFORME (both software and WMF). Isn't an issue with the software, but rather the ISP of the users, as Brion mentions in comment 11
