I have several image files that are only references as [[:Image:filename.ext]].  Special:UnusedFiles counts filename.ext as an unused file.  If I change it to [[Image:filename.ext]], it no longer shows up in the unused file list.

I guess "used" means "embedded" in this context, not "linked".

If you say so.  Whatever the case, I am of the opinion that it should not be considered an unused file.

I've clarified the default text on the special page in r60058. As for not including files that are only linked, I agree that this is the intention, recommend WONTFIX.
