Description Patrick Westerhoff 2009-11-29 01:30:48 UTC
I have noticed this problem multiple times before and wiki users keep asking why they can't see some of the images. The problem is that some files and thumbnails are stored within a folder that is called "ad" and most ad blockers just see the /ad/ in the file path and block it. While it is easy to set up those programs to not block "ads" from the site in question, it is still annoying and not really a good solution when looking at new users (which might just think that it's broken).

So if it is possible I would like to request that in future MW versions file folders with the name "ad" are no longer created. It should be easy to prevent that name from being used and probably helps a lot of people.

Disable hashed uploads.

It's a browser problem and something that's not default, users have to go out of their way to do this. IMO, not something mediawiki should concern itself with trying to work around.

Marking this WFM. Can be avoided by changing either $wgHashedUploadDirectory to false or setting your own $wgLocalFileRepo config in LocalSettings.

Ah, didn't know about these settings, thanks, I'll try it out.
