Description Krishvanth 2009-11-25 20:37:49 UTC
ok this isn't a bug at all - i just wasn't clear whether feature requests go to this site and decided to jus go ahead...

sharing... you'd have seen those little share buttons in various websites tat allow pages to be shared between various parties... posted to stumble, digg, delicious, facebook, twitter, google, etc etc etc and the works!

granted, one can simply copy the url, paste it wherever we want and share it, but adding this feature in the 'sidebar' will be the next step in sharing better...

and yes, i'm perfectly aware that the pages may change after sharing but the thing is when people can do share the pages manually, one might as well make the process a little simpler and add the custom share buttons to the side...

i've marked this as trivial but frivolous would be more apt i guess... jus hope to see it soon in the wiki projects..!! :)

There's already an extension for that http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Social_Bookmarking
You can see some wikis using it on the links at the bottom.

well actually what i mean is something more for the general public :) modifications done by me here is jus gonna be local rite? or for my own wiki's? in case i can customize the wikimedia projects' interfaces, tats cool... i've no probs with code but lotsa wikipedian users aren't really fond of following even the most simple instructions... but another thing is i probably hv to be logged in all the time to see my own additions in the code... anyway i'm talkin abt adding that feature in a way that any regular user, signed in or signed out, can see and use the share buttons... i hope you get what i'm tryin to convey... like someone's gotta add tat as a default for the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation... a global change is in order, rather than local customization...

also, for users logged in, an option in the settings tat can render the share buttons visible or invisible will be well received by a lot... and regarding the placement, it could be made at the left side, rather than bottom - placing the stuff you might need to use at a common location i.e. the sidebar will be convenient... or perhaps another option to change the placement of the share buttons could be included...

thanks!
