It would be easier to guess what sort arrows are for if they had a title attribute. It should describe what kind of action will occur - 'Sort the table ascending', 'Sort the table descending'.

Assigning to self since I'm working on implementing a jquery version. Since I'm using background images, best way would be to stick the title attr to the whole cell.
Need to check whether we already have appropriate i18n messages for that.

I find this a bit confusing; the arrow points in one way (or both ways if it hasn't been sorted yet), while the tooltip describes a different sort from what you see.
