Recently, clicking the signature icon has stopped working correctly - it does not place the dahes & tildas where the cursor is, but jumps up a number of lines in the text. This has been going on for about 3 days. I rebooted my computer, thus clearing the Explorer 8 session & the problem has continued without exception. I have to manually add the 4 tildas to sign within my own text
The problem does not appear in Firefox - where the old icon (just the scribble without the pen) is still there. This is with the new icon that includes the pen. I am actually having other issues editing too. SOMETIMES I cannot get back inside the edit box -- the text outside the edit box will get highlighted until I click -- but I have to end the IE8 sessionS & start a new one to clear this (related?) problem
Ok, as soon as I reported this & checked to see if it was an issue in Firefox too, I can now, for the first time in 3 days, use the icon OK. Go figure --- I'll contact you if there are any further developments
Now I've got the other problem about getting back into the edit box again -- and the signature problem is still a problem in Simple wikipedia, but not (presently) in regular wikipedia
Which toolbar is this? The 'old' one or the 'new' one by the Usability Initiative?
It is "A" new one -- the one with the script AND pen in the icon, not just the script. It seems now that I have both problems AFTER the first time I click the icon - both jumping of tildas upward into text and then having problems getting cursor back into edit box
Which browser are you experiencing this problem with?
As I said above twice - IE8
Could this be the same issue as described in bug 20900 comment #14?
It seems similar - especially the part about highlighting outside the edit box. I am noticing that nearly always (or maybe always) the --~~~~ gets inserted inside a previous signature
I just installed the latest Java for Vista from java.com -- no improvement. I can only find ONE instance where the --~~~~ did NOT get inserted inside a previous sig. And yes, the problem went away for maybe one session, but has returned - even immediately after having closed all IE8 sessions.
also for many weeks now - my new entries into the edit box have been appearing in a line just below the edit box. It appears something (java?) cannot tell where the edit box ends.
Either it's getting worse or I am noticing things more. Now after adding inside the edit box, if I click outside the edit box, I cannot re-enter the edit box. If I TRY to re-enter the edit box by TRYING to click inside the edit box again, some of the text outside the edit box gets highlighted & the cursor jumps up somewhere off the window.
Trevor, could you try to reproduce this? (In reply to comment #10) > I just installed the latest Java for Vista from java.com -- no improvement. I tried on another computer & did not have the same problem. I think the problem started about the same time that I installed Family Tree Maker 2009. It has some integration with the browser, so it looks like they need to be contacted.
Probably the reason why my install of Firefox does not have this problem is that Firefox does not fully process what is inside the edit box. I cannot do a "find" for text inside the edit box. Is there an add-on to Firefox to enable that?

Fixed in r59185.
OK, the signature seems to work Ok - but the (perhaps related?) issue of not being able to re-enter the edit box remains
(In reply to comment #18) > OK, the signature seems to work Ok - but the (perhaps related?) issue of not > being able to re-enter the edit box remains > The fix is not live on Wikipedia yet, only on http://prototype.wikimedia.org/deployment/ . Are you having the second issue there as well?
I was just using regular wikipedia - maybe I was just lucky that the signature jump did not happen that one time
I created an account there (did not know bout it). Both issues seem fixed there.
