Description zedlik 2009-10-07 18:51:25 UTC
Hello. Please, change the base Wikipedia link for be-x-old usage statistics to http://be-x-old.wikipedia.org/ (currently it leads to http://be.wikipedia.org/) (see the URL page, [1], [2]).

Additionally, please update the title of the language from "Belarusian (Tarashkevitsa)" to "Belarusian (Taraškievica)" or "Belarusian (Taraškievica orthography)" as it is written in the localization messages file for the locale at http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/languages/messages/MessagesBe_tarask.php?view=markup

Thank you.

Done, although 2nd request is somewhat arguable to me.

Taraškievica is the spelling in the be-x-old language itself as prescribed in
http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/languages/messages/MessagesBe_tarask.php?view=markup

Here we are talking about English spelling (there is no be-x-old version of wikistats)
and AFAIK English localizes all foreign names without accented characters.
Please comment.

Hello Erik,

Thank you!

Regarding your notice about the second request. Yes, you are right, "Taraškievica" is a name in Belarusian (not in the orthography we are talking about, as it is uses the Cyrillic script, rather the Belarusian Latin script, but nevertheless this is Belarusian). I agree that the diacritics are usually not kept in English, but only in the cases when the proper name is adopted in English. Now we have the situation when this name is not adopted and not widely used in English, so the proper name in Belarusian seems to be correct even with diacritics, like it is correct for non-english proper names with accented characters or geographical proper names with umlauts, for instance.

Anyway I will ask for a community opinion and get back to this question, thanks!

Hello Erik,

Sorry for the delay with the response. You asked about the proper Wikipedia title in English. I asked the opinion about it in the Village pump, so the community decision on this question is the following. If no encoding restriction is present, the usage of “Belarusian (Taraškievica)” is more preferable. If there are some encoding restrictions (e.g. the codepage is limited by only ASCII characters) the title “Belarusian (Taraskievica)” (with s instead of š) may be used in this case, assuming that it stands for “Belarusian (Taraškievica)”.
(the link to the decision is http://be-x-old.wikipedia.org/wiki/Вікіпэдыя:Форум#Summary)

If you have any questions regarding this please refer to me or to the community.

Thank you once again.

Jaska, thanks for your answer. I see you asked the Belarusian community, not the English community.
I'm note entirely sure that is the right platform for questions about English transliteration.
But until someone raises the topic again I will keep it like it is.

Best regards, Erik

Erik,
sorry for the misunderstanding, now I've got your point.
Hope that we'll be able to find the answer to this question in the future.

Thanks and best regards
Jaska
