It would be useful to show a short message on the user page and talk page (maybe also on the contribution listing) of users who have been blocked, saying who blocked for what reason until when (like in the log). This would avoid redundant blocks and warn users leaving a message to not expect an answer soon. It may also help to identify trolls, but this could be misunderstood as a pillory of sorts... It would also be good (and maybe even sufficient) to show such a message on the confirmation page when an admin tries to block the user redundantly (See also the related bug #1496). Anyway, I find mayself blocking users redundantly quite often, because I want to react fast and do not bother to check the log first (which is about three pageloads away). This could be changed by showing a short message in the right place.
this bug is referred at Bug 4179: blocked status should be displayed in [[special:Listusers]]

Woops, wrong bug -- sorry :)
With latest versions of MediaWiki, where a sysop cannot block an already blocked account, I think what requested on this bug is pointless. I think it can be changed to FIXED, or at least WORKSFORME.
As a note, bug 10080 was fixed yesterday, allowing modification of current blocks.

The block page now shows an excerpt from the block log.
