I figured out that by removing the "position:absolute" from #simpleSearch button#searchButton, that the visual layout remains the same, but that the cursor no longer goes behind the button, and that it degrades "nicer" on browsers that don't support styled input fields (such as Safari 2 for instance).

This was fixed in r53846 - along with adding an RTL version of the icon.
