Right now files on a page protected by cascading protection are protected if they are on the local wiki, but not if they're on Commons. It would be useful to extend cascading protection to Commons files. Our most prominent cascade-protected pages, like the Main Page, primarily use images and files from Commons.

Going suggest WONTFIX on this one. One wiki's protection policies and decisions should not dictate another's, imho.

Plus foreign repos are currently assumed to be read only.
