Description Derk-Jan Hartman 2009-05-10 23:18:21 UTC
The english Wikipedia is having usability and maintenance problems (see the URL) due to the Collection/Books Extension. As such, tomorrow, we will be hiding the Books sidebar with CSS, until a more satisfying solution can be implemented.

Our idea is the following:
1: The books/collections sidebar becomes hidden (display:none) by default
2: We will add a link to the Special page of Collections to our sidebar toolbox. (Create article collections ???)
3: A user can set a preference option, or visit Special:Book (and create a collection) to activate the Collections/Book sidebar functionality.

We think it is important that we present our readers with as little confusing functionality as possible.

The books sidebar has now been hidden in enwiki's site CSS. We will be discussing what improvements need to be made to the software to make it more user- and site-friendly before it is reenabled.

Moving from: Mediawiki Extensions (Collection) → Wikimedia (Site Requests)
Reassign from: support@pediapress.comwikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Reasoning: This request suits the later component better

No, this is a request for a change to the extension software - which PediaPress maintains - in order to support server-side what we have now hacked together with CSS. As and when that software change is *made*, we will need a site request to configure it on enwiki. Retitling to clarify, but this is not a site request.

Re-added PediaPress support team, as this requires coding in the extension.

Seems that with the renaming to Print/Export, this extra section in the toolbar won't be hidden by default as I suggested.
