Hard redirects to Special pages do not work (they act as soft, not hard, redirects), at least in English Wikipedia. For example, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:About&oldid=259594879 and all 85 redirects listed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Redirects_to_special_pages .

They're not supposed to, in many cases. Redirect to [[Special:UserLogout]] == Bad, redirecting a random user page to [[Special:Mypage]] == confusing, redirecting a users' *own* talk page to [[Special:Mytalk]] == infinite redirect loop. Some special pages aren't dangerous to redirect to; there's a config variable that determines which ones can be redirected to IIRC. I'm not sure if that's set to all-off on WMF wikis, or if there is an actual discrepancy between what's been asked for by the devs and what's actually happening. But many special pages aren't *supposed* to be valid redirect targets.
