If MediaWiki had some sort of WYSIWYG table editing system, many more editors would be able to utilize this method of presenting information, and the quality of tables in existing articles would have the potential to be greatly enhanced. I have absolutely no idea whether how difficult this is to implement, or whether it would even be feasible, however I was thinking you would have some sort of 'table editor' page which would allow you to add/remove/split/merge rows and columns. You could also change the formatting of individual cells or other elements. Down the bottom would be an 'insert table' button which would convert the whole thing into wiki markup where you could then paste it into the article.
I've never changed anything here before so I hope these changes are OK. I'd like to second this suggestion - this is for me the single biggest problem for MediaWiki and it really needs to be addressed. Ideally they'd be some kind of copy / paste function from Word / Excel documentation like in the FCK Editor.
MediaWiki has no WYSIWYG elements, so this is very unlikely to be implemented. A similar request for VisualEditor is bug 39596.
