While that's not the current domain, it's still used on the web & other legacy domains do redirect:
*commons.wikipedia.org
*meta.wikipedia.org
*quote.wikipedia.org

textbook.wikipedia.org does exist in http://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/redirects.conf but doesn't work?

There is now textbook entry in the DNS zones :(

done. added the DNS entry and now the existing redirect to wikibooks works.
