Description tim987 2009-03-01 03:51:16 UTC
Currently users can upload images to mediawiki, but not live video streams. Mediawiki should have a feature that allows users to embed their live stream into a mediawiki article page. It should be hosted by the mediawiki software. Users can use their usb webcams or iPhone/iPhone3G.
If a live video stream is available on a mediawiki article page, there should be a "WATCH" button at the top of the page, users click on it, and all the live video streams for that article are displayed.

What could this be used for?

As an example, say a person saw a plane crash into a river, and it was all over the news and within an hour an article was posted in a wiki, people go to the wiki to read about it, and if a person with a oomputer or cellphone is at the scene and they go to the wiki's url, embed their live video stream, and now people going to the wiki article can watch the plane crash live.

In the "special pages" section there could be a "live streams" section, and when users go to it, the most viewed streams will be displayed from most viewed to least viewed. The current number of people viewing each live stream should be displayed along with the rating, url, and comments, and there should be a live chatroom box on the video stream page too.

The mediawiki live video stream player should use adobe flash or program your own open-source flash player so users don't have to download anything, and it should be widescreen 16:9 and support up to HD 1080i but also support lower quality like HD 1080p, HD 720p, SD(standard definition) 16:9 and SD 4:3(non widescreen). The video player size should be 640x385 pixels.

This should be part of the core of the next version of mediawiki because photo uploads is part of the core, so live video streams should be too.

Reduced priority -> Non major issue
Comment 2 Chad H. 2009-04-20 23:35:03 UTC
Extension request, unlikely to be a core component.
Comment 3 Thor Malmjursson 2010-05-07 15:34:53 UTC
Likely to be useful, but enough bandwidth is used already for serving Wikis without having them carrying Live HD video streaming as well. Imho, recommend as Wontfix, but that's just my opinion :)
