Description Patrick Westerhoff 2009-02-13 17:29:15 UTC
When using animated gifs on a wiki the MediaWiki software tries to create thumbnails of the images resulting in server timeouts when the maximum php execution time is reached.

For example when you try to upload a duplicate of an animation and the duplicate warning is shown on the upload page, the software tries to create the thumbnail and it is possible that only a white page is shown when the server stops. So you have no chance to complete the upload of the image in that case.
The same problem comes up when you go to [[Special:NewImages]] and the software tries to create thumbnails for all displayed images that need a thumbnail.

Would it be possible to prevent that or do the thumbnail creation for large images in a different way (maybe per cron job)?

Oh, that is a good way to resolve this, didn't know about that setting. Thanks! :)
