Description Dan Lenski 2009-01-26 22:30:49 UTC
I recently updated an SVG image on commons, basically a set of line drawings with some textual captions (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SensorSizes.svg). I noticed that reduced-size versions of this image are rendered much more cleanly and legibly on Commons, while they are rendered very poorly on En.wikipedia.

Here is an example of rendering this image on Commons:

And here is an example of rendering this image on En.wikipedia:

I don't know what the source of this problem is, but if I had to hazard a guess... I would say that there is some mis-configuration of the software that renders SVG to PNG for English Wikipedia.

Thanks for taking a look at this!

1) The linked pages are blank

2) Looking at the previous versions of the pages, there's no difference in the rendering

3) There would be no difference in rendering, because the exact same images are being used.

It's possible that you have different in-browser page zoom settings on the two sites, which would cause them to appear to display a little differently. Make sure your page zoom settings are consistent.

Hey, I'm not crazy... I'm not making this up :-) The problem seems to have gone away after about 24 hours.

Immediately after uploading the new SVG image to Commons, the PNG versions looked good on Commons and bad on En. I assume there is some lag in replication between the Commons servers and the En servers, during which the SVG rendering on En is different?

In any case, since it's only a temporary issue, I don't think it's a big deal anymore.
