Following bug 17034: Update also the favicon for all Wikibooks.
Created attachment 5688 [details] New favicon for Wikibooks ICO file, made with Gimp (16px, transparent, non-compressed)
Created attachment 5689 [details] New favicon for Wikibooks Same favicon, but optimized with IrfanView (minus 256 bytes)

Taking the oh-so-obnoxious step of assigning this to Rob to do at the same time as bug 17034.
The icon file has been moved into the document root for wikibooks and synced out across the cluster. My understanding is that it will work now, but it may have to wait for the caching of the old icon to expire.

(In reply to comment #5) > The icon file has been moved into the document root for wikibooks and synced > out across the cluster. My understanding is that it will work now, but it may > have to wait for the caching of the old icon to expire. > It seems that's not happened. Is there a way to force the cache to expire? http://en.wikibooks.org/favicon.ico still shows the old one for both myself and others.
Fixed. The relevant location was /home/wikipedia/common/docroot/wikibooks.org/favicon.ico . Note that you can use maintenance/purgeList.php to remove a URL from the squid cache.
Please have a look on https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16315#c23 ("icon/logo borders might look grainy") The same applies here, although it's not as serious as with the tile icon because the logo is bright too. Please consider using https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5688 instead [normal icon, 1.12kB; GIMP]! This icon would look somewhat less impressive (smaller, smoother), but proper if surrounding background is dark.
Created attachment 6208 [details] Screenshot of the Wikibooks favicon in Opera using Dark Skin The darker the background the uglier, so please see comment #9.
Created attachment 6210 [details] Proposed icon on black background Proof that https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5688 will work fine, also on unusual black background.
Folks get majorly upset when the favicon changes. If you would like the icon to change, I need a link to group consensus supporting your new favicon file. Without that, it does not change. Best regards, Rob
Note that it is the very same logo/icon, except that there are no fringy edges. The current favicon is just a somehow crippled version of https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5688 (original), as it turned out!
Re-opening again. Crippled icon still live. Original https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5688 is the same logo, but clean.
Done.
