When a person uploads a photo to an article an upload box is displayed so they can upload the file from their computer. My suggestion is, underneath the upload box there should be a "Link Image " box where people can enter the embed image url. For example, on Mariah carey's official myspace page(listed on wikipedia and on her website), if you go here: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=29441600&albumID=821047&imageID=251048 You will see an image Mariah Carey uploaded, and on the right hand side of the page is a "Photo code" box with the embed url which is the following: <a href="http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=29441600&albumID=821047&imageID=251048"><img src="http://b3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00229/35/13/229953153_m.jpg" alt="" /></a> So people should be able to enter the above embed photo url code into a "link image" box that the mediawiki software should have underneath the photo upload box. For example: Upload Image OR Link Image Enter image link or image embed code You should make sure the Image link feature works with Myspace photos because most of the photos would be coming from there, so make sure when people link the photos from Myspace that mediawiki resizes the image so it fits in the article page.
Feature already exists, $wgAllowExternalImages. WORKSFORME. However, this is disabled on Wikimedia wikis because the vast majority of images on the internet (MySpace being no exception) are not available under a free license and thus cannot be used within the projects.
