Now that a number of active users is visible in [[Special:Statistics]], that number should also be in siteinfo statistics in the API (api.php?action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=statistics)

Make the dictionary key activeUsers, active_users or active users? I'm not sure which one to choose.

I'd say "activeusers". Spaces break in XML, and we've never used underscores or CamelCase before.
