We should either complete the GIS extension(s) sitting around in SVN or create a new one which provides basic record of geographic coordinates, which can be plugged into existing coordinate templates on Wikipedia, and provides some basic search interface... Feature details going onto separate bugs.
Hello Brion, I'm the developer of the KML Export extension [1], that assigns geographic coordinates to articles and exports such data to Google Earth. It is in my plans to rewrite it in order to use the MySQL Spatial Extensions [2] to store (and retrieve) GIS data. Currently, the extension uses no additional tables, it just parses Geo information from the article pages (through parser functions) and stores it in the parser cache as KML objects (currently you can only retrieve GIS data from articles, not the other way around). By using MySQL Spatial Extensions, and a table indexed by the GIS columns, it would be possible to do the opposite, that seems to be what you expect: to retrieve articles from GIS data. I don't know if the dependency on MySQL Spatial Extensions would be a problem. I'm interested in this feature, although I wouldn't be able to focus on it for the next months, since I have my hands full at this moment. Some of my notes are at [[mw:User:Mr.Z-man/geodata]]. Looking at the current extension, it looks like it needs a bit of work, especially for some of the special page-y things. I have a long weekend coming up next weekend, maybe I'll take a look and see what's usable/fixable in it so we don't have to re-invent the wheel for this.
Okay, interwikis don't work here. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Mr.Z-man/geodata
