In addition to bug 889 https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=889 1) Commons should likewise indicate impending name collisions with e.g. images on any of the local projects (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, etc.). 2) Additionally, where collisions already exist (legacy issue), there should be a warning displayed on the image page, and possibly a list of such collided images added to the "Special" namespace. These suggestions seem not to have been considered in the closure of 889, which is fine since they arose during subsequent discussion. Nonetheless, these problems should be addressed.
I'm not sure about 1), since there are lots of other wikis who use Commons as file repository. We can't check collisions on all of them on upload on Commons. Regarding 2), I agree it would make sense to have a special page on the local wiki that would list collisions (I thought we already had such a page). It wouldn't make sense to have this special page on Commons for the same reasons as above. Changing the summary accordingly.
