Description geraki (Konstantinos Stampoulis) 2008-07-16 06:49:04 UTC
There is a website using the squatted domain wikipedia.gr that hosts a static copy of el.wikipedia without following the GFDL and using the Wikipedia trademark without permission from the Foundation. The fact that he is using the domain wikipedia.gr is very serious because he gets a lot of traffic from people who don't know the url of wikipedia - arriving at a website that is also an encyclopedia leaves them with the impression that they got into the original wikipedia. Wikimedia's legal counsel is aware of this and they are looking at it.

This squatter is also leeching the images from wikimedia's servers. I believe that it would be useful to block hotlinking from the domains wikipedia.gr wikipaidia.gr easypedia.gr as he is exploiting it against wikipedia and the Foundation. We should make it harder for this people to appear as Wikipedia's encyclopedia, and leaving them without images will make the visitors understand that there is something wrong.

Please see the current conversation at Meta about disabling hotlinking for all projects -
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Babel#Proposal_to_disable_hotlinking
Please also see a related bug/question I posted today -

I've never used Bugzilla so I don't know how to get attention from the devs on this.

I fail to recall who did it, exactly, but one site pointed referrers from a image-leech domain to a picture with the words, "The site you are visiting is a bandwidth leech! This is not the real (whatever).com!"

Similar has been done using photobucket, banks, etc.

The squatter removed the encyclopedia content from wikipedia.gr but it still exists at easypedia.gr.

Seems no longer to be a pressing technical issue, might have a legal aspect to it.

The domain name registrar has informed us that the registrant is taking the site down, this message comes from our Legal team.
