when using the template output you have no chance to recognize the last element from the query, so if there is a seperator used it is shown behind the last element

so maybe the last template-number could contain somekind of meta-information, they also could be used for the sortkey-problem described here (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13318)

You can use the parameter template in combination with format list, which lets you specify the separator via parameter sep. This should address the problem.
