Description Purodha Blissenbach 2008-06-29 20:43:47 UTC
As a courtesy, we should add a list of links to few pages in the MediaWiki namespace to e.g. MediaWiki:mainpagedocfooter, or as a new independent message, which an installations are likely to adopt to their own needs, such as MediaWiki:sidebar, and few others.

Let us also provide the new wiki owners a list of messages in the MediaWiki namespace which they should check in order to see that they are grammatically correct for their wikis {{SITENAME}}. Since {{SITENAME}} does not come with {{GRAMMAR}} by default, it largely depends on chance for many languages whether or not standard messages using it are gramatically correct.
Comment 1 Niklas Laxström 2008-07-04 09:48:55 UTC
Finnish translation of that message already mentions about the grammar, not sure how to get translators to add those.

Linking to other messages, I'm not sure the default main page is the best place for that.
Comment 2 Siebrand Mazeland 2008-08-13 15:34:29 UTC
I think configuration hints should not be a part of messages in the default install. Just ensure that it is mentioned on the page(s) that talk about installing MediaWiki on MediaWiki.org. There are links to those pages in the default install.

WONTFIX for me.

Closed as WONTFIX.
Comment 4 Purodha Blissenbach 2008-09-15 14:03:49 UTC
Just ensure that it is mentioned on the page(s) that talk about
installing MediaWiki on MediaWiki.org is imho certainly not enough. Not a single one who I helped or assisted install MediaWiki in recent times was aware of the existance of such lists.

Of course, there are no links to those pages that need to be inspected or altered. There is no way to provide such links from www.mediawiki.org since we cannot know an URL for a newly installed wiki. Thus, the only place where such links are possible, are from the new wiki itself, because that is the only place where an URL is either known, and/or need not be knows since a relative reference is possible.

So, I sill must suggest to provide the wiki owners a link list on their new wiki, and not force each of them to over and over again compile such a list for them selves.

i18n -> documentation.
Comment 6 Chad H. 2009-09-23 18:15:12 UTC
+easy. Just tweak mainpagetext to include what we want.

See comment 3. We should not add the manual inside the product. Suggesting - again - to WONTFIX. FYI the current main page text, which should suffice:

Consult the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents User's Guide] for information on using the wiki software.

I saw comment #3, but I don't necessarily agree. While I certainly agree that we shouldn't be including a full manual in the default main page, a few minor tips for the like 3 most asked questions would be helpful. Even if it's just "Wondering how to customize the sidebar, check ....." or "To enable uploading, follow these ....." and link the appropriate MW page.

I agree with Siebrand here. WONTFIX vote from me.
Comment 10 Chad H. 2009-10-02 19:10:47 UTC
Meh, still disagree, but marking as such...
