This might depend on the "correct" interpretation of the GPL, bug try to follow me here;

the JavaScript files found in MediaWiki, for example wikibits.js, is licensed under GPL, and as it is "linked" to the resulted html, any other linked scripts must then also be licensed under GPL, e.g. MediaWiki:Common.js etc...
