This is a problem with the ShortCategory extension.

Not quite. It is a problem with the ShortCategory extension, but I can't fix it because (as far as I can tell) there's no way to modify the output of the category page preview. The available hook (CategoryPageView) only works on the actual page output.

Hook is not meant to trigger there

Then how in the world am I supposed to fix this? Or this this just something that MediaWiki can't do? Seems more like a WONTFIX to me.
