When an article A is moved to the new name B, all content, page history, and status (such as protection level) of A is moved to B. A also becomes a redirect to B. If A is a protected page, when it is moved the created redirect page should be protected by default.
Maybe this is better done as a checkbox, because it doesn't seem desirable all the time.
A checkbox that is by default checked. Having such optional freedom would be nice. Yes, I agree with you. Another issue is that the logs for the protection are not carried to the moved page. I protected [[User:White Cat/Protecttest1]] and moved it to [[User:White Cat/Protecttest2]] http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=User:White_Cat/Protecttest1 http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=User:White_Cat/Protecttest2 As seen above the logs indicate nothing special has happened to [[User:White Cat/Protecttest2]] and despite this the page is protected ([edit=autoconfirmed:move=sysop]). However logs indicate [[User:White Cat/Protecttest1]] was protected and moved. There is no indication from the logs if [[User:White Cat/Protecttest1]] was unprotected at any point and despite this the page is currently not protected.
I moved quite some protected pages in my time already and the redirects were protected all the time. Marked as "Resolved" thus.
