Description FT2 2007-10-08 12:37:41 UTC
"Create new account" has the various fields first, then the "create account" button and below that, any text, cautions and warnings.

Some of these messages are very important and yet a user creating an account will usually not see them because of their location. In particular this includes the warning tabout choosing a username that might be harassed and will be plastered all over the wiki if they edit, which is a crucial warning to know about yet is buried in a lot of text, underneath the "create account" section where it's likely that very few will see it and take note.

Enhancement request:

1. Specific messages created so that text can be placed between capcha and "username", and (in small font) below each of the "username" and "re-enter password" boxes. At present it seems that messages can only be placed at the end of the page, and under the "email" box.

2. The default message under "username" to be set to read (roughly): "Your username will appear frequently and publicly on the site. Consider carefully whether to use a real name or pseudonym."

This will allow important messages on the create account page to be customized, and also make the privacy aspects of choosing username choice much higher profile.

There's already an RFP for that www.mediawiki.org/wiki/AccountCreation & an extension under development www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SignupAPI

Once deployed this will surely be taken care of. Closing the bug for now.

Note: all this is en.wiki-specific. Also, quite adventitious/occasional; most of that text has been killed, as far as I know.

This is not valid for all wikis.

Cluttering the account creation interface more seems a very bad idea.
The general idea of making it easier to customise the account creation page in a less aggressive way has some value, but after re-reading this bug I don't see any acceptable proposal here. Closing.
