Description Sheldon Rampton 2007-08-17 06:42:51 UTC
Our wiki has some 10,000 articles that belong to a category named "Tobacco documents biographies." In order to sort those names alphabetically by last name rather than first name, we have entered the category tag as [[Category:Tobacco documents biographies|Doe, John]] (so that John Doe would appear under the letter "D" rather than the letter "J").

In the process of editing these articles, I noticed that the category page sorts articles by the HEX VALUE of their sort keys rather than by their alphabetical order. Thus, people whose last names begin with a lower-case letter rather than upper-case get sorted to after the upper-case letter "Z." This means that [[Category:Tobacco documents biographies|de Leon, Ponce]] would get sorted to well after the position where people would expect to actually find it.
