The description (and other text if applicable) should preferably not be broken in the middle of a word. Instead of. "The tiger inhabits the ra..." it should be: "The tiger inhabits the rain..." I'm not sure if this can be done in pure CSS.
It can't (that would have been text-overflow: ellipsis-word which was in the CSS3 working draft for a while but did not make it into the current version). It's doable in Javascript but truncating rich text in Javascript is not a trivial task. (Even with text-overflow there can be nasty surprises, see for example bug 67896.) At some point we planned to use $.dotdotdot for this, but it never got done.
