Created attachment 9678 [details] Hindi wiki screenshot with Lohit font Poor readability due to Lohit-Devanagiri hinting issue.
I tested the following wikis too and most of them had the hinting issue. Sanskrit (Also uses devanagiri I suppose) Odia Telugu Kannada The readability factor has to be determined by user who understands the script, the importance of hinting to differentiate similar looking chars etc.
This issue needs to be clarified a lot, and ideally on an issue by issue basis.
Yes, Sanskrit also has the issue with Lohit font. Also, there were similar (minor) problems with the old font as well (I'll save that for another bug).

Can you annotate in screenshot where you see text with issues?
(In reply to comment #5) > Can you annotate in screenshot where you see text with issues? Uhm, I just realize that the extremely blurry text IS in fact an image file. Sorry, my fault. Srikanth: Could you clarify where exactly the issues are located, in case they still exist, and which browser and version is used?
The problem is related to how WebFonts are hinted on Windows XP / IE combination (sometimes even Ff,chrome) when the font does not have hint information in them. I could not get a screenshot now, but I am pretty sure the issue exists. There is nothing we could do to this except making non Lohit font as default font when they are available. Marking it as upstream
(In reply to comment #7) > Marking it as upstream Errm, upstream for which project exactly? I'd prefer to have existing upstream bug reports when adding the "upstream" keyword. :)
(In reply to comment #8) > Errm, upstream for which project exactly? I'd prefer to have existing upstream > bug reports when adding the "upstream" keyword. :) It's not a preference, it's a requirement.
It looks OK to me now. The WebFonts extension was retired. If there are still hinting problems, please reopen under Universal Language Selector component.
